Rembrandt   (1606 - 1669)

Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669), Dutch painter born in Leyden. Until 1631, he worked there and in the Hague and, thereafter, in Amsterdam. He received a classical education at the Leyden Latin School, which he left shortly before finishing the 6-year course. Rembrandt's first two masters both worked in Italy. Due to his background and training, Rembrandt began his career with a certain degree of learning, considerable familiarity with early 17th century developments in Italian art and a multi-sectarian perspective in a society where religious affiliation was extremely important.

Between 1632 and 1636, Rembrandt attracted numerous lucrative portrait commissions. From 1636 to 1642 he worked at a slower pace on more ambitious compositions. He moved beyond the emulation of Rubens to vie with Titian, Leonardo and Michelangelo. Rembrandt also experienced problems in his career. From 1642 to 1652, despite his great renown, he received no significant portrait commissions. His position of financial insecurity is reflected in the subject matter of his paintings and etchings. Rather that the large-scale histories and grand mythological subjects of the 1630's, he now painted sentimental cabinet pictures of familiar biblical and household themes.

Of all the graphic art produced throughout history, it is the work of Rembrandt which to this day is encountered with a unique combination of reverence and awe. As a printmaker there is simply no comparable artist with which he can be measured. His etched subjects have been and remain a universal standard by which the art world measures its graphic work
