Old Man Shading His Eyes with His Hand
Original etching and drypoint printed in black ink on laid paper bearing the
Arms of Bristol watermark (Ash/Fletcher 4.A.a).
Platemark: 5 7/1 6x 4 7/16 sheet size: 5 11/16 x 4 11/16 inches
c. 1638

Sold

A fine 17th century / lifetime impression of Bartsch's only state, Usticke's first state of five, in which the very last vertical line at the left of the cap curves very slightly in to the right.

In very fine condition, printed on a sheet with small margins all around. For one or another reason this print has remained unfinished. The head and left arm of the old man are etched with care, but the costume and chair are merely indicated in a few loose strokes of drypoint. The handsome drypoint work in the hat and sleeve that can be admired in early impressions such as this one, is nearly totally abraded in later impressions

Bartsch 259; Hind 169; Biorklund-Barnard 38-8; Usticke 259 i/v
