Signed and dated in the plate Rembrandt f. 1651.

A strong, dark 19th century impression of Bartsch's sixth and final state, Usticke's seventh state of nine.

Printed after the addition of further shading to the vest below the collar and to the crown of the hat, issued circa 1808 in the Basan Receuil.

In excellent condition, printed on a sheet with small margins all around. Clement de Jonghe was born in Braunschweig in 1624 or 1625. From 1650 until his death in 1677 he lived in Amsterdam, where he made his living as a publisher and dealer in prints and maps. The 1679 inventory of his estate included the first long list of Rembrandt etchings. The simple straightforward pose, the direct stare and the strong and sparse composition in this etching make it a truly striking portrait. Some Rembrandt scholars believe that the knee-length format of this work was inspired by two of the great Venetian portraitists - Titian and Tintoretto.

Bartsch 272 vi/vi; hind 251; Biorklund-Barnard 51-C; Usticke 272 vii/iX
